Writing different types of essays with command has been critical for academic success of an individual. Essays are a common part of school tests, college admissions and even analysis of test results of an experiment performed in a laboratory. There are basically over a dozen types of essays but all of them may be broadly divided into four main categories. Types of Essays: The 4 Major Categories

All the four categories of essays are roughly divided on the basis of a writer’s goal while writing it. Let us take a proper look at them

  1. Narrative Essay: Here the writer tells the story of a real-life incident. Now, writing a story may seem easy, but actually the writer needs to think about a lot of aspects for writing a story perfectly. They should make sure that the reader is always deeply engaged in the story by making it more vivid and interesting. These type of essays are always written in first-person to make it more engaging for the reader.
  2. Descriptive Essays: A descriptive essay is quite similar to a narrative essay. Here the writer tries to paint a picture with his words. In this type of essay, the writer should show and not tell by using a vivid set of words to draw a picture of what he wants to describe. This is more emotionally appealing to the reader than the narrative type.
  3. Expository Essays: This is an informative type of writing to evaluate a topic. In this type, the writer defines or explains the topic with facts and examples to make it more appealing to the reader. This is not written in first-person as it is not a a narration and does not involve any emotion or the writer’s personal experiences.
  4. Persuasive Essays: In this type, the writer tries to convince the reader to accept his opinion or view with the support of proper explanation of facts and examples. The writer should present all sides of an argument and then provide facts to support why his point of view of the argument is correct and should be accepted.
